All About Bruised Bone Causes & Symptoms

The medical term for a bruised bone is periosteal. There are various ways in which you could bruise a bone, such as trauma due to injury, straining the bone, etc. The most common reason that people receive bruised bone injuries is from sports activities. There are a number of different kinds of bruises that your body can sustain, but the bruised bone is one of the most painful; in addition, this type of injury takes a while to heal.

To understand bruises on the bone, it is necessary to understand what bones are. Bones are basically hollow, and inside the bone is a network of fibers. The areas between the fibers are filled with calcium. When there is trauma to the bone, the fibers within can break and this can lead to leaking of the substance between the fibers. If only a few of the fibers are broken it will cause a bruised bone, but when a lot of the fibers are broken it can actually be a fracture.

One of the most prominent symptoms of a bruised bone is pain. The area where the injury occurs can be very tender and painful. When you have bruised a bone you may also have symptoms such as inflammation of the area that is affected, and some stiffness. Although in some cases the skin around the injured bone may look red or purple in color, there are also cases where there will be no sign of injury at all, except for the pain. Chances are, if you have a bruised bone in your foot, leg or arm area, you will not be able to maintain the same physical activities that you did prior to the injury, at least not until the injury has healed.

There are not a lot of ways in treating a bruised bone, except for to let it heal over time. Although the skin discoloration and swelling may subside after a couple of days, the tenderness and pain can linger for a very long time. In the case of severe bruising of the bone, healing may even take up to a year.

If you receive an injury to your bone that causes pain, swelling and skin discoloration, the first thing you will want to do is see your doctor. Your healthcare provider will likely recommend that the area be Xrayed. Although it is impossible to diagnose a bruised bone with an Xray, what they can do is rule out any possibility of a bone fracture. Once a fracture has been ruled out, your doctor can then recommend possible treatments.

There are home treatments for bruised bones that can help to relieve your pain and aid in the healing process. The first would obviously be to eliminate any strain on the injured area; so reducing physical activities which could cause strain is a must. For the first few days after receiving the injury it is recommended that you keep the injured area elevated; this will help to reduce swelling and pain. Do not wrap the injury with a bandage.

Another way to help reduce the pain of a bruised bone is to apply an icepack to the area. You can either buy icepacks at the store, or you can put some ice in a ziplock bag and apply it to the area. This should be done about two times a day, but for no more than about twenty minutes at a time. This treatment will reduce inflammation and pain in the area of the bruise.

It is also recommended that you begin taking vitamin K and C supplements; these will help encourage healing of the bone. Over the counter pain medications can also be used to ease the pain while your bruised bone is healing.
